What Is a Medicine Degree?

Saving someone’s life is perhaps one of the most remarkable feelings in the world. Even so, not so many of us have the chance to experience this. It takes passion, a strong personality and years of study to be able to work in the medical field.

Pursuing a Medical degree is not only challenging and demanding but also competitive. Medical degrees are shaped for people who show high motivation and commitment as well as interest for sciences.

Throughout a Medicine degree, candidates are equipped with a wide range of competences, from practical abilities required for specialized hands-on tasks to communication skills needed to interact with the patients. Thus, any medical students will be able to take a simple blood sample as well as perform a complex surgical procedure.

Benefits of a Medical Degree

Undoubtedly, medicine is one of the most vital fields of work – therefore there will always be a high demand of workforce needed. The employment rate for a medical graduate student is of 90%.

Due to its diverse branches, graduates from a Medical course have a variety of career choices, according to their expertise. Nursing, radiology, anaesthetics are just some of the many specialities offered in this field. Regardless of the speciality, the most important aspect needed to be taken into consideration is that medical professionals are well-respected and well-paid all over the world.

Additionally, graduates possess a series of transferable skills, such as logical reasoning, critical appraisal, listening, written and oral communication and many others. These assets are sought and highly valuable in most fields of work.

Medical Degree Structure

Medical courses are usually a six-year commitment, but it can vary according to the university. Most of the modern universities integrate clinical education with basic sciences from the beginning of the academic curriculum, while traditional institutions divide them into preclinical and clinical education.

Most schools understand the importance of practical knowledge, especially in this field, therefore they encourage the students to observe professional healthcare practitioners. Another way to gain practical experience is to go to different clinics and receive specialised training, followed by actual practical work.

No matter the practices of the university, always keep in mind that medical courses are structured differently in every country. Therefore, medical qualifications gained in one country are not necessarily recognised in another country.

Lot of opportunities to gain experience.

uOttawa is overall a good school. Being located in the capital city has a lot of benefits, including that it is easier to find jobs, co-ops, internships etc. The only downside is that if you don’t speak French you will find yourself quite limited in where you can apply and you will likely find it harder to find opportunities.

Being a big school, there are lots of clubs, organizations, teams, initiatives etc. that you can involve yourself in. Also, the professors are very involved in cutting-edge research and require a lot of assistance from students as volunteers or assistants. There are lots of opportunities here which can be very beneficial to you as a student in building your career.

The downside however, is that the University administration tends to be quite unresponsive, which can lead to a lot of stress.

Well organized courses. Option of thesis project

I really liked the program as it prepared me well for applying to various master programs or professional schools. Secondly, it allows numerous opportunities to work with faculty members on research projects e.g UROP, and Honours projects. Additionally, we are provided with the option of adding a minor from another faculty or specialize in something from our faculty e.g. public health, health technologies, or bioscience.
However, I took off one star as the university did not run a Co-Op program for this degree.

    Does the UOttawa accommodate students?

The University offers many resources for research and co-op opportunities and is deeply integrated with the Ottawa General Hospital. The professors are for the most part dedicated and understanding; however, faculty complaints are rarely resolved – especially when regarding professors. The housing accommodations vary; Rideau residence costs almost as much as the all-inclusive on-campus residence with a 10 minute walk to campus, an unsafe location, less amenities and lack of action for student concerns. Other on and off campus residences are for the most part quite pleasant. There is a lot of walking to reach classes on campus, however most buildings are connected and in very short distance of one another. Overall, physical accommodations (especially on campus) are okay, whereas accommodations from the staff and faculty have room for improvement.

    Health Sciences

This program is really flexible since it allows us to add a minor or an option, there are 120 credits to be earned in this program where 1 class = 3 credits.

This degree focuses on many different aspects of health so it is very interesting for those who enjoy learning new things all the time instead of sticking to one thing. You can take this program in French, English, or both languages.

There are different professors in this faculty, and many of them are mostly researchers. There is a blend of good and not so good professors so once you pick your classes check rate my prof to get results on how the professors are.

    Health Sciences at uOttawa

I love how interdisciplinary this programme is, I can be learning about health in the environment and anatomy at the same time. Health sciences here at uOttawa is incredibly flexible, where you can fit 10 elective classes in your degree with any class you like in other faculties.

I wish this programme had CO-OP work placements which would help us get a job in the field of health sciences while studying.

Most diverse school with outstanding programs

UOttawa is an amazing school that has plenty of diversity in the nation’s capital. With programs in both English and French, Ontario bilingualism is rising! Beautiful school, knowledgeable professors, and extremely accommodating.
