What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

    Inclusive Community Centric Education

Vancouver Island University has been the home base to my education for the last four years, and I am so grateful for it. There are consistently community events and I always feel a part of something when I am on campus. The faculty are always lovely and supportive.
Just get ready to stretch your legs! There are a lot of stairs and the campus is built on a hill. My calves are real strong after four years of this! Wheelchair access to buildings can be lacking and navigating campus purely by ramp is confusing.

    Wrongfully accused of plagiarism

In my last year of my program the entire faculty of my program accused me of plagiarizing. When I proved to them with months worth of evidence that my work was my work and no one else’s, they turned a blind eye to it. Never apologized and told me it was the best for me to sweep it under the rug and forget about it. Once I have received my degree I will be going to the dean and whoever is the top person at VIU to inform them about this. The professors in this program are the most unprofessional people I have ever come across in my whole life. They pick favourites and grade on a curve depending on how much they think you deserve based on their teachers pet’s work. The building smell like mold and have deteriorating since I’ve started going to school here.

They act like they care about the students mental health but then refuse to help when asked. One of my closest friends was extremely suicidal and all the professors were aware but still pretended like nothing was going on. They talk poorly about her to one another while her fellow classmates are around, and they don’t even lower their voice, it’s like they WANT us to hear what horrible people they are.

Absolutely WORST university! Never in a million years would I recommend people to become a student at VIU. They are millions of dollars in debt and are making tuition cost more every semester thinking everyone just shits money out of their ass.

They scam, they lie and they racially profile.

I hope they soon file for bankruptcy because this university is a joke!!
