Yerevan State University - YSU (reviews)

The university is the oldest in the country and is one of the leading ones. What I liked about the university is that it’s the only one in the country that offers a wide range of majors to choose from, that’s to say it is not just specialized in just a couple of professions. As for my own experience I mostly enjoyed studying German; I had great professors who made the learning process both effective and fun. As a result of my hard work and my professors’ ability to teach the language so well I was able to receive a scholarship and attend a summer school in Germany. I also really enjoyed studying Foreign literature; this gave me a chance to enrich my knowledge about the world of literature, see things from another point of view and dive deeper in the works of great authors. Aside from academic experience I really liked being part of the indoor climbing club which was a great opportunity to meet new people and be physically active.
What I did not like was the library; unfortunately most of the books were really old and so the information was also outdated. Another thing I didn’t really enjoy were the lectures which were not interactive at all.

Yerevan State University is the oldest university in Armenia, as it was established in 1919, and, by the way, it’s celebrating it’s 100th anniversary this year. While being old, YSU is really modern, despite the old buildings. It’s already a year that we started also online education, which gives you the opportunity to get all the materials you need of exact subject from an online platform, where you also answer questions and do tests, and where you can get in direct contact with your lecturer via online chat. Despite this online system, YSU is also one of the best universities in Armenia that gives you also good traditional method education. It has also the biggest university library where you can get most of the books you need (also in online format). Of course, there are many minor disadvantages, but there’s no such University which is perfect. That’s why I always recommend my junior friends to apply to YSU!

From all higher education institutions in Armenia YSU is the closest to the Soviet standards. Everything here is not like I expected when I was a first-year student. If I had a different profession and not the profession of Computer Sciences and Applied Mathematics, I would definitely get a chance to change the university or go abroad to get a higher education.
The most global and seemingly incorrigible issue is in the system of exams.That means YSU teaches its students HOW to pass any exam. But don’t you think that the main purpose of every university should not be that? However, this and any other issue has an almost century-old approach so it will be very difficult to change anything. The only thing that we can do is be proud to receive a diploma of higher education so that we will be able to find a job in Armenia if we stay here.

I studied Social Psychology. In general, the professors were qualified. However, the university is disorganized and if there was a problem with a date or an exam, the student is to blame not the university. Moreover, you can’t complain if something’s wrong or if a professor is not qualified or something.
