Studying Biomedical Sciences at the University of Birmingham has been both a challenging and rewarding experience. When I initially started the degree in September 2022, I was thrown straight into the deep end, covering advanced A Level Biology topics (a subject I had not done at A level), alongside some more medically oriented modules as well. As interesting as it is tough, it is a degree you should take great care in deciding to do as it is quite content heavy and you must have a passion for not just medicine, but also the biological mechanisms that underlie many processes within the human body.
Besides the course content, almost all of my lectures have been in the medical school. There are pros and cons to this, with all of our lectures being in once place it is easy to find and when you have a full day you can sit in the ‘Med Cafe’ in your breaks so it almost mimics a school day which is nice and structured. However, the medical school is just outside of the Birmingham campus so you do not get to go in so often which is a shame as, in my opinion, the campus is one of the best parts of the University.
Now in my second year, I feel more settled within the course and the University. I have managed to make great friends and have seen success in my exam results this year. Furthermore, the social aspect at the University is amazing and I still have more than enough time to see friends and go out with such an intense degree.
Overall, I would 100% recommend the University of Birmingham as a place to study, and Biomedical Sciences is a great degree if you are passionate about the subject.
View moreUniversity of Birmingham is a gorgeous campus. It has really extensive study areas, a great 24-hour library, and great resources both in person and online. As a history of art student, an on campus gallery is incredible – as well as the Barber Institute library AND Cadbury Research Library and archives. My history of art lecturers and course leads are really friendly and knowledgeable, and the people that run the Barber Institute are really helpful too. Being based out of a gallery, the opportunity to volunteer and gain experience is really great. I do very much enjoy the courses and modules on offer in my degree, with a range of assessment types.
However, the university is not very catered to commuters, with nearly everything being centred around the students that live on the Vale or in Selly Oak. Being a red brick university, the overall atmosphere can be very judgemental. As someone with a working class background, it was a crazy culture shock when I first joined. The university’s option to take a year abroad is a great opportunity, but they provide very little information about the actual process in general.
Overall, I would only really recommend attending University of Birmingham if you have the opportunity to live on campus, as it can be really isolating and excluding if you do not.
View moreAs a law student, a common stereotype of a typical law degree would be long, boring classes fully based off theory and essays. while essays and theories are a necessary part of the law experience, the University of Birmingham Law School modules also cater to the more creative sides of the law. modules of creative writing, blogs, videography, podcasts, etc., are available. modules on makeshift court sessions to practice advocacy. deeper research on the law and its ethics, and using legal skills to tackle modern-day concerns such as artificial intelligence. not only do you gain the necessary tools that prepare you for the legal world. you also gain additional knowledge that puts you one step ahead and allows for flexibility after your studies.
View moreUoB is an extremely diverse and welcoming university with a beautiful campus. Provides students with the best environment to succeed and offers consistent support. After nearly 3 years of studying at this university, I can confidently say that I would not have wanted to study anywhere else but here.
View moreIn my first semester of the biochemistry degree, I found the course content to be both challenging and intriguing. The subjects covered, such as molecular biology and organic chemistry, provided a solid foundation for understanding the intricacies of biochemical processes. I particularly enjoyed delving into the complexities of cellular structures and functions. However, I also encountered some difficulties, especially in grasping the nuances of enzymatic reactions. This highlighted the need for me to refine my study habits and seek additional resources for a deeper understanding. Time management proved to be crucial, and I learned the importance of allocating dedicated study time for each subject. Constructive feedback from professors and peers was valuable in identifying areas for improvement. Overall, my first semester was a mix of excitement and learning curves, and I am motivated to build on this foundation for a more successful and enriching academic journey in biochemistry.
