Student Visa Requirements

Great news for citizens of EU, the European Economic Area or Switzerland! If you want to study in Romania, you do not need a visa. Even so, you will have to register with Romanian authorities in order to obtain a residence permit.

On the other side, if you are not a citizen of these areas and you want to study, research or train for more than three months in Romania, then you will need to apply for a student visa. In order to obtain the visa, you need to be accepted on an academic programme in an officially recognised institution in Romania.

STUDENT ACCOMMODATION IN ROMANIA

Like the majority of European countries, Romania has plenty of accommodation options to offer to its students. You can choose between large private apartments or University operated accommodation.

You must take into account that availability and quality will depend on three factors – the region, which institution, and academic results.

APPLYING TO ROMANIAN UNIVERSITIES

In order to apply to university, you need your diploma and previous academic results. However, each university has a particular application process.

Depending on what you want to study, you will have to pass an entrance exam to be accepted. Our advice is to research the universities you want to study to and learn more about their application guidelines as well as deadlines.

ROMANIAN TUITION FEES AND FINANCES

If you have an EU citizenship, then you will have to pay the same tuition fees as a local student. The vary according to the university’s sector – public or private.

Public institutions have two types of positions – budgeted and tax positions. The fees for tax positions range between 2.500 and 9.000 RON p/year. Private sector tuitions are usually an average of 2.500 RON p/year, depending on university.

As far as loans are concerned, there are two types – social grants and excellence grants. Only Romanian citizens can apply to social grants, since they take into consideration the annual financial situation of the student’s family. In contrast, any student can benefit from excellence grants, based on his/her academic results. It can vary in value from 5.000 RON p/year. Contact your university for more information.
