As a graduate student in the Classics Department at UT, I saw a very limited section of the university, but I am proud to say that we have one of the greatest collections of Linear B tablets in the world, our own private library, and some of the most brilliant minds in the emerging fields of Classical Women’s and Sexuality studies. There are also many opportunities within the department to teach, giving their graduate students the chance to get a massive leg up on the competition from even larger and more “prestigious” universities, where one might not even set foot in a classroom to teach until their last year. There are some small quibbles I would have with the university’s attempts to defund our library, but thanks to the support and love for our space (that we, of course, share and open to the student body at large), this initiative was quashed.
