Some years later, in 1944, the school was renamed Rochester Institute of Technology, and it officially became a research university. The original campus was located in Rochester, New York, by the Erie Canal. However, in 1959 the New York Department of Public Works announced that a freeway was going to be built there. Therefore, the university bought a new campus in the east bank of the Genevese River, in Henrietta in 1961, and officially moved there in 1968, where it resides today.
In 1966 the university was named the site of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and its first students enrolled in 1968. In the following decade, the institution took over Eisenhower College and in 1990 the college started its first Ph.D. programme in Imaging Science.
