I chose this University from its reputation and the course content fit my interest. After spending nearly two semester there, here is what I am feeling.
The quality of the lessons and instructors are not as good as expected. Classes were always not well prepared, the instructors always ask the students what they want to know and just tell us only the surface, not into technical details. There always be lectures for guest speakers scheduled but always be cancelled due to the guest’s private reasons. The marking criteria of many assignments are unclear and the feedback is too general. Overall I don’t feel like I get much new knowledge from here.
However, the university facilities are good. With 24 hours open library, securities on campus, extra skills development classes and events from the student union, it makes campus alive and fun.
It is an international university. However, my class was too international but lack of local British or even European students, only 2 British and less than 5 European out of nearly 30 students. Actually more than 80% are from Chinese speaking countries. This is not good for international students who also want to learn about British culture and make local friends.
After COVID-19 happened, the university is being helpful and providing much support to the students who choose to remain on campus. Such as free 3 meals every day and providing cleaning equipment for students’ room. They also let students who choose to go back home to be able to cancel their contracts with a refund. And no detriment policy was made to last year undergraduate students.
In conclusion, I think this university has well student support in many aspects such as soft skills development, various kinds of sharing facilities, and living support. Nevertheless, the curriculum itself is yet to be improved with more contents in deep details and make sure to compensate the students when they get less than what it has to be.
