Solent University has a lovely campus in the city’s heart and is well equipped with anything the students might need. The campus is dominated by The Spark, a modern, extraordinary building with interactive teaching spaces and lecture theatres. I did most of my studying in The Spark`s main hall as it has desks with power sockets, comfortable sofas and the right motivating atmosphere for me. Overall, the university staff is super friendly and always willing to help. The Student Hub provide support for any problem, including mental health issues, disability support and career advice.
Tutors at my course were dedicated, knowledgeable professionals from the events industry. Their lectures were full of relevant information, discussions and critical thinking practices. However, the University handled the pandemic period poorly, resulting in a massive drop in teaching quality. Many vital classes such as audio tech and lighting were contacted only briefly online and without any live experience as we were promised. At the start of my final year, most of our tutors left the university, leaving us in the hands of academics who had no industry experience. Therefore, successfully finishing the last year and producing a good-quality dissertation was very challenging.
Thanks to this sequence of events and the university’s procedures, I would not choose Solent University again. However, I would definitely choose Southampton as a city because it has excellent conditions for student life. It has many great places to go out and socialise, lush nightlife, cheap private accommodation and beautiful parks.
