Nowadays, more and more students start to pursue a degree in modern languages. A modern languages degree is not only related to learning a new language but also understand the cultural context of the countries in which the language is spoken.
Candidates studying a modern languages course will also be given knowledge and experience of the political and historical contexts of a particular region. On top of that, the use of literary texts and media will develop not only their skills but also their perception about learning a different language.
Due to the increased globalisation, there is a high demand for modern languages graduates. The ability to communicate in another language and understand its background is a major advantage.
Modern Language courses are designed to give students transferable skills, which can be applied in all areas of activity. Candidates will have high communication skills, accompanied by data collection and interpreting skills, which are appreciated by employers, regardless of your career choice.
Modern Languages Degrees are four years commitments, out of which one semester or a year should be spent abroad – in a partnered institution. This gives students the opportunity to practice the language they are studying and understand a new culture.
Modern Languages is a degree that can be studied either as a single honour degree or a joint honour degree. This gives students the ability to combine modern language with another course such as politics, literature, history and many others.
Exeter speaks for itself in a lot of senses. A high ranking university with a strong tradition of good academic and sporting results. I had a fantastic time socially, engaging in the many sporting and music opportunities and made many great friends. The coastal location is also ideal for the summer and the facilities and student accommodation are modern.
As a languages student, the French and Spanish departments were second to none throughout my time at university despite my second year being completely online as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We had plenty of extra chances to engage and develop our language skills and the lecturers are supportive and extremely knowledgeable across all disciplines covered by the course.
My one criticism of the programme, and the reason I have dropped a star, is the support for the year of study and work abroad (YA). As a compulsory element of the modern languages degree, the support team need to take more initiative in helping students organise work placements, and also have some understanding of the visa processes for EU countries post-Brexit. My cohort was perturbed massively by these kinds of issues and we were left to our own devices to rectify them. I understand that Brexit posed challenges but they very much failed in their role with my year group. I would hope that given the feedback they received from us, steps are being made to improve this.
Exeter is a great university for the all-rounder, those that are serious about their studies but enjoy their social, sporting and other extra-curricular activities. This kind of ethos creates a healthy relationship with higher education.
View moreI really enjoy the inclusive campus feel, all of the classes and activities are all in one place and it always has a happy vibe. I have always enjoyed the way lessons are run, and I have been lucky enough to make some amazing friends for life there.
View moreI studied French and Italian at Exeter for four years and after graduating last year I can already say I miss uni life and my overall experience there! Exeter is a great uni to be at, the campus is lovely – there are lots of quiet places for walks in nature and the facilities are great, especially the library. There are many study spaces for both independent and group studying too. For language students, the year abroad is probably the most exciting year and Exeter really do everything they can to make the transition easy and they provide excellent and constant support when you are in your country of choice. I met wonderful people, have made friends for life, and if I could I would go back tomorrow! Good luck to all future students 😀
