Bahçeşehir University (BAU) was founded in 1998. The university is a private educational institution that is based in the beautiful city of Istanbul, Turkey. It was given the “Superbrands of Turkey” award in 2017. The university is home to 9 faculties, 1 language school, 2 vocational schools, as well as 4 institutes for postgraduate education. BAU is one of the few schools in Turkey that holds lectures in English, making it a truly international school. Many foreign students study at BAU, they come from near and far to follow one of the excellent degree programmes at Bahçeşehir University. It is not only a dynamic, vibrant learning environment, but also an international communication exchange. Most foreign students come from China, the US, France and South Korea to benefit from the school’s international outlook. The school works closely together with academic partners across the globe; “BAU GLOBAL” gives students the chance to take a course in their area of study at one of its centres in either Istanbul, Berlin, Rome or Washington DC, as well as to apply for BAU’s summer abroad programmes. At BAU, students can study at undergraduate and graduate level. Currently, 17,487 undergraduate students and 8,405 are enrolled in programmes at BAU. Associate degree students are also represented, at the moment 1,318 of them are studying at BAU. The faculty is made up of 1,047 academic staff and 506 administrative personnel. The school is spread across 4 campuses in Istanbul, delivering over 100 programmes. As mentioned before, BAU has numerous international partners, more than 193 to be exact. The modern campus has a large library, as well as five different cafés and restaurants. BahçeşehirUğur Educational Institutions is well-known and appreciated by companies and business and individuals alike. It owns 35 kindergartens, 18 elementary and 47 high schools, and 177 private educational centres, all of which are based in Turkey.
My overall experience at Bahçeşehir University (BAU) has been very positive. The university provides a modern learning environment with strong academic support and many opportunities to grow professionally. I studied Computer Engineering, and I appreciated how the programme focused on both theory and practical skills. Many courses were taught by experienced instructors who were approachable, supportive, and knowledgeable.
What I liked most about BAU was the access to hands-on projects, industry connections, and opportunities to participate in real-world work through collaborations, competitions, and internships. The atmosphere is diverse, and you meet students from many different countries, which helps you build communication and teamwork skills.
On the downside, the workload can be heavy during some semesters, and administrative processes can occasionally be slow. However, the overall quality of education and the support you receive make up for it.
I would recommend BAU to students who want a modern, internationally-oriented university that helps them become job-ready with practical experience and strong academic foundations.
View moreThe university’s grading system is designed to be student-friendly, as it removes direct professor control over marks, which helps prevent potential bias against students.
However, a significant challenge for international students is the language barrier. Most professors are native Turkish speakers with limited English proficiency, creating a substantial communication gap. This language barrier often forces students to rely on self-study, rendering classroom attendance largely ineffective.

What stood out most for me is the strong international atmosphere — students come from many different countries, which makes the learning environment diverse and open-minded. The professors are supportive and knowledgeable, and classes are interactive and practical. Campus life is active, and the location by the Bosphorus gives a great atmosphere. Overall, BAU helped me grow both academically and personally, and I would recommend it to future students who value a global education.
View moreBAU has a strong global outlook with great opportunities for international learning. Its central location in Istanbul is vibrant and inspiring. Istanbul location adds a dynamic energy to the learning experience.
What I dislike is: tuition can be expensive.
Bahcesehir University was a competitive and welcoming university for international students. My time spent there as a business student was fun as well as informative. I enjoyed my time at BAU and also in Istanbul both as an educational institution and second home. The teachers were very welcoming to international students and helpful in many regards.
The teaching principles were not outdated and modern teaching methods were used so as to give the students a clearer picture of their courses and studies. In general they had a very warm and welcoming approach to student problems and counseling, the best way they could.
Overall my experience as an international student at Bahcesehir University was uplifting and entertaining as well as informative and helpful for my future life. The exposure I received from living in Istanbul was essential for my growth and a person. I would recommend this university to students looking for both the eastern and western perspective of living and interacting with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
