What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

    Universiteit Leiden

__Besides Leiden being an amazing, beautiful city for students to live in, I can confidently say I am really glad to be studying at Universiteit Leiden. The city is beautiful and the faculties are scattered around town, which causes the university not to feel like a massive institution. I am studying Film and Literature, which is a relatively small study in terms of students. Because of this, most students and teachers know each other and there’s quite an informal ambiance. This leaves a lot of space for personal guidance when needed. The teachers all have an extensive, broad knowledge and manage to make every lecture very informative and often also apply an interesting interactive approach, involving students in the classes and encouraging them to actively contribute. Film and Literature as a field of study is however a relatively new one in Universiteit Leiden, which sometimes causes some chaos and confusion in the organization of classes. The ‘experimental’ way in which most of the lectures and classes are structured can be very educative and advantageous, but sometimes results in some kind of disorder during classes.____The University also offers quite a lot of extracurricular activities to develop yourself in other fields besides your own, such as the Honours classes, language and arts courses and a lot of lectures which are free to attend. __Of course I can only write from my own experience with Film and Literature, but the university offers a really broad variety of different studies. I am myself active in the field of arts and humanities, and Universiteit Leiden is known for being one of the most high-quality universities in the Netherlands in terms of humanities, which I can fully endorse.____Something that does strike me as being remarkable, is the small amount of international students. Most of the lectures are being given in Dutch, which of course does not seem very encouraging and inviting towards international students. The housing system is also not very advantageous for expat students, since houses can (and in a lot of cases, unfortunately do) reject international students. I am however not entirely sure this is one of the responsibilities of the University. I do think more lectures should be in English, in order to be more inviting towards international students.____In short, I think Universiteit Leiden offers high quality education in various different fields. Especially in the field of humanities, Universiteit Leiden is one of the leading institutions in the Netherlands, which is in my opinion entirely justified! __
