The university campus is really pretty but it was not as international as I originally suspected. Nevertheless, it is not impactful whatsoever! everyone is friendly. However, I am dissatisfied with some of the administration problems I faced with little to no help.

I am currently a first-year student taking business in RUG. I am not fully content with the way the university handles course changes. Especially because I wanted to change to Biology 2 weeks into the course but the uni did not let me, therefore I am stuck in business until Fall 2022.

    Excellent Support

I started my masters course in February 2022. I am fairly new to this city and the University but so far, I have had excellent support and assistance from all the staff members from administration to my lecturers. I was unable to figure out how to operate ‘nestor’ to register for my modules but thanks to the support from my course coordinator and the help desk for sorting out my issue.
In addition, the business school is truly the right place if you want to jumpstart your career because of the opportunities such as the internships programmes.

    An open University

I really like to study at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. I feel like the communication is right and I also have the idea that everyone feels welcome over here. I think that is a really important thing to have as a university. There are probably a lot of things that could be better but compared to my other schools etc. I think the RUG is doing really great overall.

Flaws in management are reflected in quality of teaching

I took part in the Business Administration program and studied at the University for 4 years, graduating with a MSc degree. I would not do the same program again at this University. The program is heavily focused on research, practical exercises are far away from anything that can be expected in real-world settings. Grading of practical exercises is almost always outsourced to students who are not qualified to do this job. Hence, the feedback on exercises is useless and the grading is inconsistent to say the least. The use of unqualified personnel to grade and evaluate papers and exercises points towards a flaw in management. Money is saved at places where it negatively impacts the quality of teaching.

The University does not make use of industry standard programs during the courses and exercises. Instead, programs are used that no company uses. A proclaimed top 100 University fails to deliver adequate skill development. The professor supervising my Master’s thesis provided feedback extremely sparsely and the quality of feedback made me think that the professor never fully read my thesis.

All in all I conclude the University could improve the quality of teaching immensely by using more qualified teaching personnel to grade and evaluate papers and practical exercises, as well as using industry standard programs to facilitate acceptable skill development.

    High level of education

The university of Groningen is a very international university with students and professors from all over the world. The main language spoken is thus English which makes it for every student easy to feel belonged.
The university has a very high level of education which makes it easy to apply for future jobs since it is widely recognised!

For students there are plenty of possibilities next to studying. For a low price you can be a member of the sports club and participate in free sport courses. SInce English is widely spoken in Groningen it is quite easy to find a side job as a foreigner as well.

Lastly, the nightlife of Groningen is fantastic and perfect for every student to relax after a tough day of studies.
