This review is based on my Bachelor degree in Computer Science and Engineering, starting 2009. Before starting my studies at the university I felt pretty welcomed, with days to inform yourself (including professors being available for talks, sample lectures you could follow & food). The start of university didn’t require any additional pre-courses and the level was pretty well adjusted to what you learn in school (note: I attended a Dutch highschool). As every university, some courses were more designed to teach technicalities, but in a very fair way. The dutch system consisted of approx. 30% practical courses that went along with the theory that was teached in the same semester, which gave a very good insight to theory like Matrix multiplication in 3D graphics or TCP/UDP for Networking.
As I mention in the title, it is pretty school-like; around 35 hours of tuition (theory, exercises and practical work) per week, plus assignments. Every 8 weeks you’ll get an exam-period. Conclusion: Keep working, it’ll be hard every day but then exams won’t stress you out.
One thing that I would like to mention was the possibility to do one semester in another subject (called Minor) – one could go in-depth or broaden their horizon, which is still the most open possibility to do Erasmus I have heard of. Due to a small amount of Students in my Subject (<100 per year), we got a very personal help for any problem.
I really enjoyed my education and felt very welcomed.
