Teacher Training

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has more than one Campus, my opinion is just based in my experience at the Campus where I studied my Teacher Training Degree. I consider the University is just good enough to get the University Degree and needs to improve a few things to actually consider it is a good place; the buildings could be better, my main class had almost no space for all the students and a big pillar in the middle of the room so if you were sitting behind that you couldn’t see the teacher or the board. I studied Music Education and I believe that some teachers need to update themselves a bit, some music lessons were very boring for example, the teacher made videos for practising and that’s all we did during the sessions, every single day, didn’t have any interest at all in improving the teaching method. After 3 years playing music I learned just very basics, and don’t find myself confident enough to teach Music with the music level a Music Teacher should have (play an instrument with confidence and being able to improvise in playing music). The material, in this case the instruments, many were old and some of them not very well treated, the piano was missing 1 or 2 keys! Some teachers really made the difference and we still learned things, a subject related to Special Education was very difficult and hard exams, our teacher Rosa Marchena was an amazing teacher so every single lesson was really interesting and we learned something every day, she made it easy and very motivating for us to learn, pass and enjoy the subject. It is a lovely Degree to study, very busy as well because students need to do lots of group activities, so they spend a lot of time in the Campus. The library was Ok, not very big but quiet, if you need a hand with finding a book somebody would help you with no problem, If they didn’t have a book, you could order it and get it delivered to the library. The computers were a bit old and slow, you could borrow laptops but the University needs to buy new ones as these were very old, the battery didn’t last long and you had to work with the laptop plugged. The opening times of the library were very short considering how long the students need to be studying, instead they had a few classes open 24 hours, I did like them because they were very quiet and almost no one was in there during the evening or night time, but if you were going you had to be the first one so you could get the big table (the teacher’s table) otherwise you would end up in one of those chairs with a little “Table” in one of the arms or the chair.

In general, it is a backward University, needs to spend some money to improve, the teachers are ok, some of them amazing and some of the miserables, some of them would be happy to help you and some of them ignore you. If you want to study a Teaching Degree you can study it here and everything will be Ok, but If you have the chance I would advice you to find another University with more and better sources.
