Studying Geomatic Engineering at JKUAT was a rewarding experience that gave me a strong foundation in spatial data science, land surveying, and geospatial technologies. The course is very practical, with hands-on work in GIS, remote sensing, and GNSS applications, which are crucial for the current job market.
I particularly appreciated the dedication of some lecturers who went the extra mile to ensure we understood both the theory and its application in the field. Our final year projects also pushed us to work independently and apply real-world data in meaningful ways. The university has decent lab facilities and access to key software like ArcGIS, though access could be improved and better supported at times.
On the downside, some parts of the curriculum could benefit from modernization, especially with the rise of AI, Python, and cloud-based geospatial tools. Administrative delays and lack of consistent academic support outside class hours were also a challenge.
Overall, I would recommend the Geomatic Engineering programme to anyone interested in a tech-driven career in surveying, mapping, or geospatial sciences. It’s a course that demands hard work and self-motivation but provides a strong skill set for both industry and research.
