What Is an International Business Degree?

Globalisation strengthens the connection between companies from all over the world. It is time people understand the importance of international business.

International business degrees are shaped to give students practical knowledge about different business management practices from all over the world. In addition, candidates are prepared for business careers abroad or in organisations that are engaged in business on a global scale.

Moreover, international business is vital in order to understand different cultures and mindsets and ultimately become a global citizen.

Benefits of an International Business Degree

A degree in International Business prepares you for a job in a culturally diverse business environment, which means that any graduate can benefit from opportunities in any country.

The advantage of an International Business course is that you are highly employable for most industries since the majority of skills acquired are transferable.

Candidates studying international business will also gain information and insight about the difficulties of starting and growing businesses from different countries, something which is of utmost importance for anyone who wants to make their business thrive.

International Business Degree Structure

International Business is usually a three-year commitment, depending on each university. Lately, there are institutions which offer the possibility of having a ‘sandwich course’, which basically enables the candidates to work abroad for one year in the industry, as part of their studies.

The purpose of the ‘sandwich course’ is to encourage students to step outside their comfort zone and work in a different culture and environment. In this way, they will understand other mentalities, as well as gain relevant working experience in the field.

    Erasmus programmes

I have been a student at NUI Galway since 2019. I study a Bachelor of Commerce with German, meaning my course includes a mandatory Erasmus year in Germany. Going on Erasmus can be daunting, especially during Corona times I had to receive all the information online and through emails. However, NUI Galway made the whole experience easy and the coordinators were very helpful and always communicated with us. I choose the Georg August Universität of Göttingen as my Erasmus destination. Even though I am in a different country the Erasmus coordinators of NUI Galway constantly check up on me, and I receive emails regarding social events in Göttingen to help me mix with other international students. The support I have received from NUI Galway has been outstanding. Often people assume when you reach University you are just another number, but a lot of my lecturers have made the effort to get to know us personally and it really makes you feel more at home. The student life at NUI Galway is brilliant, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The clubs are welcoming and very talented, and the societies are endless, for example, there’s even a Harry Potter society. If clubs and societies aren’t your thing, the student bar on the campus (Sult), is constantly hosting events and showing live sports. In summer they even have a DJ outdoors, which overlooks the River Corrib. The University is very international and has ties with many universities around the world, and the international students always integrate very well with the Irish students. I am not worried about finding a career after I finish my degree as the University constantly emails us with career prospects and holds career fairs regularly. I still am unsure what my career path will be after University, but by having so many options of modules to choose from every semester, it makes it easier and less stressful to test the different modules and find what is suitable for you. If you choose a module and within the first few weeks you decide you are not enjoying the module, you can change modules at ease. However, in the first lecture of the module, the lecturer clearly states what’s involved in this module, about any assignments, and the exam, so you will have an idea of what the module entails. Overall, my experience with NUI Galway is very positive so far, and my Erasmus year is definitely one of the best years of my life. I am travelling Europe and making friends from all over the world. It has really opened my eyes to a whole new world and the possibilities that are possible after my degree.
