DCU was founded in 1975 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Dublin and enrolled its first students in 1980. Located on the northside of Ireland’s capital city, the institute achieved university status in 1989 and is today a multi-campus operation still known as the name it was given as a newly-established university – Dublin City University, or Ollscoil Chathair Bhaile Átha in Irish Gaelic.Show more

I think DCU as a university is great, its truly a pleasure studying here. The atmosphere on the three campuses respectively is something unlike other universities. Yet it is a true representation of the Irish education system, it has its pitfalls, especially in regards to my course, Applied Languages and Translation Studies. While the ability to take on up to two European/Asian languages is considerable for students, the transition from secondary school language learning to university standard learning can be challenging for some. I think of it less as a fault on the university’s part and more as an oppourtunity to revise some specifications within the courses’ structure. I’d recommend the addition of a module focusing on building confidence in language learners and developing their language learning skills.
View moreI enjoyed studying for the MA in Social Media Communications at DCU. There are a couple of reasons why I loved it so much. Firstly, I could choose if I want to study it full-time (one year) or part-time (2 years). This was one of the most important factors that I have chosen for the programme. Secondly, the choice of modules was so good and specifically selected, that I think they succeeded in including all the main assets of what is social media in general. Thirdly, the lecturers were so friendly and up-to-date with the social media realm and trends. Plus, they were so open-minded when it came to discussions and debates and they even gave us projects and essays with interesting topics. On the other hand, there is just one thing that I did not enjoy that much, or that I would change in the future, which is that there is no practical module for any of the subjects that we studied. Not even a practical project or a collaborative project with some PR or marketing agencies. I would have loved it during the programme or at the end of it, to have some discussions with some freelancers, companies or different brands which could have given us a chance to prove our work and skills and give us a chance for an internship or a Graduate Programme. Overall, I would recommend this Master Programme to anyone who is passionate about social media and communication and wants to specialise in this specific communication area, which is social media.
View moreAs a recent graduate of the Public Health program at Dublin City University (DCU), I can confidently say it wasn’t just about textbooks and lectures. It was about diving headfirst into the real world of public health, right in the heart of a vibrant city. DCU’s program is a melting pot of nationalities and disciplines. We tackled global health challenges alongside students from across the globe, learning from their diverse perspectives and experiences. But the impact wasn’t just theoretical. We also partnered with local NGOs and communities, applying our knowledge to real-world issues right on Dublin’s doorstep. DCU’s professors are passionate public health champions who’ve walked the walk. They brought their expertise from the field into the classroom, weaving real-world anecdotes into lectures and offering invaluable mentorship. Office hours were open invitations to brainstorm ideas, share experiences, and get guidance from seasoned professionals. From the bustling streets of Temple Bar to the serene beauty of St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin was our living laboratory. We analyzed public health interventions in action, from community outreach programs to healthcare initiatives. The city itself became a case study, offering endless opportunities to learn and apply our knowledge. DCU’s program doesn’t just teach you about public health, it equips you with the tools to change the world. Internships at leading healthcare organizations and NGOs provided invaluable hands-on experience. And if you crave a global adventure, study abroad opportunities across the globe let you broaden your horizons and learn from diverse healthcare systems. Don’t underestimate the power of a good pub quiz! Debating public health policies over pints honed our critical thinking skills, while late-night study sessions fueled by Irish coffee forged lifelong friendships. These informal discussions were some of the most valuable lessons we learned, pushing us to think outside the box and apply our knowledge in creative ways. DCU’s program doesn’t just give you a diploma, it equips you with the skillset to thrive in the ever-evolving world of public health. From celebrating International Public Health Day with fellow students to presenting our research at conferences, DCU was a whirlwind of experiences that will stay with me forever. It’s not just a degree, it’s a journey of personal and professional growth, filled with laughter, learning, and lifelong friendships. If you’re passionate about making a difference in the world, DCU’s Public Health program is your launchpad. It’s a place where you’ll learn from the best, gain real-world experience, and become part of a vibrant community dedicated to improving public health for all.
