The teachers are very helpful, you can ask them anything you want and they are willing to help you and learn with you. The school has a good study program with a variety of classes and subjects that you can choose from. The people on campus are very friendly, you can make new acquaintances very easily in the campus cafeteria and conflicts are rare in this school. If you attend this school you will receive general knowledge about four aspects of geography (physical geography, social geography, economical geography and anthropological geography) that are the basics for your further studies in many different fields. The school receives some Erasmus students yearly so it has configured courses for students who speak English. Although I would like some more lab lessons I believe that the school is well staffed in this area.

I have been studying at Harokopio University for four years and I am very happy with the choice I made to study in the geography department. The university is excellent, with good facilities and excellent staff. At Harokopio University we take care of the exteriors and interiors. I love the tranquillity of the outdoors that the trees give!

It has University Departments and Curricula of special character in Greece, excellent building and technological infrastructure and a high level of research work and international presence that ensure a quality academic environment for its students. At the same time, it pays special attention to the professional rehabilitation of its graduates and its multifaceted connection with society.

The Harokopio University of Athens is a public university focused on a small set of intellectual areas which include Home Economics, Geography, Nutrition and Informatics and Telematics. Specifically, the Geography undergraduate program is an assemblage of courses that cover four very different fields, which came as a surprise to me when I first enrolled. From Geoinformatics to Historical Geography, to Geomorphology and Spatial Management, there is a great balance between theory and practice, and mandatory courses aside, after the sixth semester, students are given the opportunity to choose which of the four directions they wish to follow.

The facilities by themselves are excellently maintained and COVID precautions are still taken carefully and considerately. As far as the courses go, the department is always striving to provide students and staff alike with new upgraded equipment for the best experience in practical courses, utilizing an online platform accessible to students any time of the day where lectures and other material relevant to the courses is uploaded on a regular basis.

Textbooks are provided for free each semester and most of the professors also offer additional helpful material to assist students, along with everything the university’s library also offers. Additionally, the professors themselves are kind, friendly and willing to help any struggling students both within their office visitation hours and through email, with most of them offering an immediate response to concerns relevant to their respective courses.

From what my personal experience showed me, job opportunities are hard to find as a student, mostly due to how new and little known the department is, but there certainly are a lot of options after obtaining the Bachelor’s degree. The university even offers opportunities to pursue a Master’s degree in one’s own alma mater and other post-graduate degrees through the ERASMUS program.

In conclusion, choosing to attend the department of Geography opens up new doors with branching paths that go further than the definition of geography as viewed by the public, which in turn provides the students with the necessary skills and knowledge to gain access to more than one sector of the national and international job market.

Founded in 1990 as the successor of the Harokopios Higher School of Home Economics, the Harokopio University of Athens offers degrees in Home Economics, Geography, Nutrition and Dietics, and Informatics and Telematics.

Being a 3rd year undergraduate student in the department of Geography myself, I can vouch for the quality of the facilities as well as the equipment used during lectures and excursions. The Geography department prioritizes practical skills and hands-on experience over theory and allows students to partake in assignments and workshops throughout their 4 year study period. The curriculum also encourages students to choose their classes from the 6th semester onward, creating a unique academic experience that fully equips students with the knowledge and experience they need most to pursue a Master’s degree in the field of their choosing.

The University also provides students with their own personalized account to access the computers in the various computer labs as well as their university email account through which the institution keeps them informed of seminars and events in the facility and the city in general. There is also a fully automated student platform through which students can examine their grades, select courses and request papers, avoiding needless bureaucracy. In addition to that, the university also offers a great deal of post-graduate degrees and opportunities to study in some of the best European institutions through the ERASMUS program.

With regards to the educational staff, the professors are helpful and will assist students with their assignments and respond to their emails as well as utilize the online e-class platform on which the lectures are uploaded and can be accessed at anytime by students who participate in that class. The University will also provide students with free books, journals and textbooks – many of which are written by renowned authors and may normally be exceptionally expensive – to assist them in their studies and academic pursuits. Geography students in general are guaranteed to have a robust library for free by the end of their studies.

A downside to choosing this institution would be its relatively short period of existence. The Geography department is fairly new and, thus, hasn’t been that well established within the Greek academic community yet, let alone the European one. Students will bear the burdain of having to prove the quality of their education since they can’t rely on the institution’s pre-established background alone. With that said, the Harokopio University has proven time and again to be one of the best, most active institutions in Greece, earning the trust and respect of various other institutions and donors. For example, the first ever Remote sensing and Space Applications seminar/workshop in Greece was hosted in the Harokopio University by the Geological Society of Greece.

Where many might see an unknown, fairly obscure institution others can see an up and coming academic powerhouse that offers many opportunities and fully equips students with the necessary tools to survive in the demanding worldwide job market as well as the competitive environment that is modern academia.
