What is a Psychology Degree?

Psychology is the favourite science for students who want to get into the depths of human feelings. This is considered to be the science of mind and behaviour. More specifically, psychology wants to explore the way people think, act, and feel, by appealing to the emotional side of people.

Passion can lead students to choose this specialisation. It is not considered a difficult one, but it is not very easy to approach, as the theoretical elements of the discipline are combined with the practical ones.

After studying Psychology, students choose to specialise in a particular sub-field. Depending on their preference, they can choose between Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology and many others.

Benefits of a Psychology Degree

Psychology is a great opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to know others. Thus, students who are looking to understanding human behaviour, feelings and mind gain an inside vision of what these notions really mean and what determines people to make certain decisions and act under different circumstances.

The employment rate among Psychology graduates has grown in recent years. Salaries are satisfactory, and young people can focus either on psychological services in schools, hospitals, treatment centres, clinics, depending on the specialisation chosen. Furthermore, Psychology graduates can integrate a career in social media, marketing, and advertising, as they understand best the reasons why people choose to make decisions according to what they see in real life.

Psychology Degree Structure

In the four years of Bachelor studies, graduates acquire the necessary knowledge to practice Psychology, initially learning the underlying theoretical notions. These notions become an important starting point in their career, seeing later how practice blends very well with theory. It should be noted that on the labour market, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree are much more appreciated and have an advantage over those who follow simple courses.

A Master’s program usually lasts between 2 and 3 years, coming as a complement to the Bachelor’s courses. Master courses have a much more loaded curriculum and a great deal of information. A Doctoral program is dedicated to students who want to do research in Psychology in various institutes or to become teachers. This has a duration of between 5 and 7 years.

    The Sense of Community

Although I am only two years in to my program, I have grown really fond of my university. The campus is incredibly beautiful and well-maintained, balancing the natural environment, and the infrastructure. It encourages a sense of community, by having a very clearly laid out campus. It feels like a little town, where everyone is genuinely motivated and interested to learn. I have been lucky enough to have passionate professors, who have all created an environment where I’m comfortable to learn and make mistakes. I feel comfortable in the student body, and feel well represented. Overall, I am proud to study here.

    Positive Review: Psychology Major

As a recent graduate of the University of British Columbia’s Psychology program, I am thrilled to share my overwhelmingly positive experience. UBC’s Psychology program is truly exceptional, and I am proud to provide my heartfelt endorsement.

The faculty at UBC’s Psychology department is a group of dedicated and knowledgeable experts who are not only passionate about their subject but also deeply committed to their students’ success. Their teaching methods are engaging and enlightening, and they foster an environment that encourages critical thinking and active participation. I always felt supported by my professors, who were not only mentors but also approachable and understanding individuals.

The curriculum is thoughtfully structured to cover a wide spectrum of psychological topics, ensuring that students gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject

UBC: The Best Decision I've Made

The University of British Columbia is an outstanding place to learn and grow. The environment itself nurtures dedicated, intelligent and change-making students. Even as a first-year student, I have gotten the chance to speak with professors, learn about academic opportunities, meet with career coaches and network with professionals. The copious amount of opportunities allows students to explore their interests and pursue their dreams. There are many beautiful places to study, and like-minded folks to build life-long friendships with. With mountains in your backyard and lectures that transform the way you think, coming to UBC was the best decision I have made.

    abundant options

even though there are many courses to choose from, choosing only what you want to learn might result in graduating with too little knowledge of a certain field. However, the programme itself is really good, as there are al to of interesting options.

Romanticize your University Experience at UBC

Picture this; Bon Iver is playing in your headphones, you have a hot peppermint tea in your hands, the light rain pushes you to whip out that cool jacket you have been wanting to wear. Congratulations! You have made it, you are now a west coast indie kid. UBC has a stunning campus, and speaking from a commuter student- it is one of the biggest motivators that gets my butt to class. The education is top tier and quite competitive, which lends itself to be one of the top schools in Canada but, it’s not just all about academics. Whether you are a dark academia type, romantic, or a beach bum- UBC has got you covered while also maintaining an elite GPA.

Take charge of your own education.

At UBC, the flexibility offered in course content and choices, allows one to shape their own academic career. One student’s schedule will look completely different than another’s. However, while independence is encouraged and expected, help is readily available whenever one may require it. UBC is a research institution; as such, many opportunities are available to all. I am majoring in Psychology and Ancient Mediterranean and Near East Studies, such an eclectic mix of subjects would be accepted in only a few institutions.

Finding Yourself at UBC - Clubs

UBC is a very connected community, with over 350 AMS clubs, from scuba-diving club to the anime club, students are bound to find a club that suits and has the potential to broaden their interests. Each club feels like its own family, where students can join and destress after a long day of studying and classes and just connect with people that has the same interest. From my own experience, UBC clubs are very supportive of each and every one of their members. And you are bound to find a place to belong in one of the clubs.

    Amazing teachers and courses

As a psychology major, I consider myself to be extremely lucky to have gone to UBC. The professors in the psychology department are almost unilaterally very kind and intelligent individuals who show genuine care for their students and there is a wide assortment of courses to help expose you to knew ideas about the world. The campus is beautiful and I like that it’s tucked away by itself in a corner of Vancouver because while it’s near the rest of the city, it still feels like you’re in your own little academic world at UBC. The school could benefit from a better social scene, but overall, UBC is a fantastic school.

    UBC

Most of the profs in the course are engaging and their classes are always fun to attend. They also often provide the option to do the class either online or in-person, which helps a lot for people like me who cant wake up early in the morning.
What i don’t like about the programme, however, is that the grades can vary drastically depending on which professor you take.
