I like the hard things in computer science, because after you accomplish them you feel a lot smarter and proud of yourself. It gives you motivation to learn more and try harder in the subject. Additionally, it is also very fascinating how technology can be used to create almost anything.

My time at Carleton so far has been a mix of feelings because there are so many aspects of the university that I both appreciate and despise. The school has a lot of locations and spaces where students may study or even hang out with friends, which is one of the things I like about it. You can even have the entire classroom to yourself to study in after lecture hours! Additionally, the residents of Carleton are quite friendly and foster a strong sense of community. The buildings’ lack of life is one of the things I dislike about it. I find the buildings to be rather haphazard and notice that each one has a distinctive aged appearance. However, ultimately, the university is a fantastic setting for growth.

I’m currently a student at Carleton, and I’m very content to be here. To students, I would heartily recommend this university. Yes, the cost of attending the university is high for overseas students, but the expense is worthwhile. Well, the faculty in my program—computer science—is excellent. My co-op [paid internship/work experience] will begin the following year. I am quite enthusiastic about my co-op. With a few exceptions, almost all courses at Carleton provide the co-op option. Every kid who earns good marks is given a job and paid for it, but only those students. In Canada, Carleton has a stellar reputation.

The course is top-notch. We complete weekly homework, which forces us to learn something new each week.The university has built tunnels that make it easier to avoid going outside in the wintertime snow.The faculty and staff at the university are really kind and helpful.I would advise attending Carleton University to experience the city of Ottawa and the Canadian winter.

The program is great when it comes to career prospects. However, professors are not very accommodating in the computer science department. I found that majority of the professors I found to be understanding of students’ situations were from my elective classes rather than my major classes. I would say the classes are fine but during our winter more classes were supposed to be in person but the majority of classes were online and it’s just not the experience students were looking for, while other universities made the transition from online to in-person in winter 2022.

Starting university is something many of us have dreamt about since high school or even middle school. Think about all that you thought it would be…Meeting new people, getting involved in clubs, learning about different cultures and making the most of your early adulthood. I too had many expectations, but the thing with expectations is that they may sometimes be far from reality. My experience at Carleton University already had a bad start to begin with, with COVID-19 plaguing the world and resulting in remote learning. Imagine the insane “college experience” that you can get sitting in your room all day watching lectures. This, however, was not the university’s fault as they had simply adapted to the situation at the time but I believe how they’ve dealt with it has kind of cut them short. Is it really worth it to spend thousands of dollars, with an increasing tuition rate, on recorded classes and almost no relationship with your lecturers? Paying the same university fee, if not even higher, for remote classes and mere online quizzes to test your ability? Many students rely on their parents to fund their studies, so is this really the type of education they should be investing in for their child? When getting to the lecturers, I have mixed reviews… Some of them have been extremely helpful, despite only being able to communicate with them via email, but others make students feel inferior and you’re often intimidated from raising your concerns in class. Now this might just be the case for me, but judging from online teacher reviews, it seems not to be. I don’t think I have ever seen a university’s social media pages (mainly Instagram), flooded with comments from frustrated and disheartened students who are genuinely unsatisfied with the experience they are getting and trying to reach out to the university as much as they can. Sadly, these students are met with no response for the university which leads us to question whether we are simply ATMs for this big “corporate” institution that only sees us as cash cows. One of the only things that separates a university from merely being a “purchased degree” is the care and support that they provide to students, but are we actually getting any? Or are we having to hold on as much as we can, just so that we make it through. I don’t know about you, but that’s not the university experience I signed up for.

I love this university and would definitely recommend it. It has a good cultural vibe and the professors and instructors are very helpful. Lot of job prospects too. They’re accommodation is pretty comfortable.
