What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

    Incredibly diverse

I’ve relished my time at Carleton since the first day I arrived on campus. The diverse student body hails from various corners of the globe, allowing me to gain valuable insights into different cultures and ways of life. I’ve even formed a close friendship with someone from Korea, and we engage in daily conversations exploring both significant and subtle cultural distinctions. I have a deep appreciation for the Carleton student community.

    Difficulty in Computer Science

I like the hard things in computer science, because after you accomplish them you feel a lot smarter and proud of yourself. It gives you motivation to learn more and try harder in the subject. Additionally, it is also very fascinating how technology can be used to create almost anything.

    Great Community

I think Carleton offers a great engineering program. Most of the professors have real world experience that they can relate back to when they teach that really shows the future possibilites with my degree. I also like the tunnels they keep me warm. One thing I don’t like is the construction makes it difficult to get around and the train has been under construction for far too long.

I think it is a very well put out school, the environment is very pleasing. You meet and network with a lot of people because of the events they host. I also think their business program is very helpful for future initiatives I want to accomplish.

Computer Science at Carleton - My experience

My time at Carleton so far has been a mix of feelings because there are so many aspects of the university that I both appreciate and despise. The school has a lot of locations and spaces where students may study or even hang out with friends, which is one of the things I like about it. You can even have the entire classroom to yourself to study in after lecture hours! Additionally, the residents of Carleton are quite friendly and foster a strong sense of community. The buildings’ lack of life is one of the things I dislike about it. I find the buildings to be rather haphazard and notice that each one has a distinctive aged appearance. However, ultimately, the university is a fantastic setting for growth.

    Excellent

I’m currently a student at Carleton, and I’m very content to be here. To students, I would heartily recommend this university. Yes, the cost of attending the university is high for overseas students, but the expense is worthwhile. Well, the faculty in my program—computer science—is excellent. My co-op [paid internship/work experience] will begin the following year. I am quite enthusiastic about my co-op. With a few exceptions, almost all courses at Carleton provide the co-op option. Every kid who earns good marks is given a job and paid for it, but only those students. In Canada, Carleton has a stellar reputation.

    Excellent

The course is top-notch. We complete weekly homework, which forces us to learn something new each week. The university has built tunnels that make it easier to avoid going outside in the wintertime snow. The faculty and staff at the university are really kind and helpful.I would advise attending Carleton University to experience the city of Ottawa and the Canadian winter.

    Carleton University: A Non-Academic Review

Carleton University (CU) has a beautiful campus located centrally in Ottawa. The campus is surrounded by nature making it pleasant to study outdoors. In the winter, the river adjacent to the University is a great place to skate which is commonly enjoyed by students. Unfortunately, I am not that great at skating.

Carleton University also has a network of tunnels linking all the buildings. The tunnels are incredibly convenient during the harsh winters of Ontario, especially if you’re an international student whose not used to freezing temperatures.

Many students attend CU – it can get quite crowded. I often had issues regarding parking on campus. Prices for parking are quite steep (we are students) if you manage to find parking. Students often park at the park opposite CU (across Bronson Avenue). However, they are met with a 3 hour time limit. Fortunately, CU provides access to busses (included in tuition with an opt out option) which is what I resorted to in the end.

Overall, I would recommend CU to national and international students. The experience I have had is incredible (after COVID) and have met many wonderful people who have come from all over the world.

    Online University Experience

I spent my first year in residence, however, all of my classes were online. This proved increasingly challenging, as accessing extra help from teachers always took a lengthy amount of time. While the courses were set up fairly well, I found my program to be extremely challenging. Carleton provided PASS extra help, where an upper-year student would host meetings to help students with the material. I enjoyed these workshops and did find them helpful. Although, I do think certain teachers had unrealistic deadlines and weren’t as flexible, considering the online nature of each class. I also spent much more time watching lectures than I would have if they were in person. Many professors would assign way more than the designated slot for lecture time and it was difficult to keep up. As for on-campus life, most events and clubs weren’t running due to COVID-19 and so it is hard to fully review its campus environment. However, the facilities were quite nice, including the gym and the ice house. Overall, my first year at Carleton was a challenging one and I do think some improvements could be made. This includes easier and faster access to professors, possibly even short zoom meetings to clarify certain topics from the lectures. I also think that they could provide more resources such as volunteer one-on-one tutors. University can be demanding but it is important to cater more for the students and aid them on their journey through their degrees.
