New Bulgarian University in the country’s capital, Sofia, is a private liberal arts institution established on 18 September 1991 after a resolution by the Bulgarian Parliament. NBU has significantly contributed to higher education in the country as a whole; leading the way for the introduction of a credit system, encouraging continuing education, as well as welcoming to the country many professional degree programmes such as bachelors and masters. Mind Blowing Experience

Having professors that are interested and care about your growth has been one of the mind blowing experience for me here at New Bulgarian University. Asides from that the surrounding is beautiful and refreshing. Although the feeding and accommodation options aren’t the best here at New Bulgarian University , I would say I have been blown away since I got here. Will I recommend? Definitely!

I am an international student in the Psychology Bachelor’s program offered in English at NBU.

So far, so good. Most of the professors are really helpful and understanding, and our collaboration is excellent. I enjoy the lectures, and I find the overall program rather pleasant, interesting, and mostly up to my expectations.

On the aspect of the complaint, first and foremost, a select few one or two professors need to work on their deadlines management and be better at answering emails and rating their students on time (just so we have time to make any necessary arrangements) and do so while still being professional and kind.
Moreover, it would be really helpful if more people in administrative positions spoke English because for us non-Bulgarian speakers it can be a nightmare trying to communicate and have our questions answered when people behind these important desks lack the knowledge of the language. That being said, the same with emails, the moodle page, e-student, the library, and all sources of information students have access to, need to be offered in English as well to prevent miscommunication and misunderstandings. It’s a basic need.

That’s all, NBU is great and the Psychology in English program is rich, but sometimes it’s hard to appreciate when there are fundamental deficiencies such as (some) slacking professors and a great language barrier.
If you offer an opportunity for English speakers to study at your university, you need to make sure their needs are taken care of!

Discussing Goals and Projects With the Professors

The master’s in planning and regional development is going to be the end of my education for now and I plan to finish and graduate next year because I am currently starting work. This is a great program for young ambitious students that also have other career opportunities and can’t postpone their goals. I’m starting a small position in regional governance and I am also able to take courses online. This new implementation in the program was urgently needed in the past years and it’s now very well adapted and advanced to fit everyone’s needs. Both professors and students have the chance to discuss their interests and goals related to local governance and find ways to implement change. We had a great time working with professional staff and developing projects, some of which are already put into motion at the state level. The degree is advanced and helpful to everyone who wants to find a good position in this field of work.

A step in the right direction

The city and regional planning program at New Bulgarian University wasn’t my first choice but nevertheless, it became my first and most important passion project. I was constantly engaged in the ideas and valuable projects of the department since day one. Some of my professors turned out to be much more involved in the process of regional governance than actual political figures. I had to understand the importance of joining the ruling and organizational structures on every level as a citizen before I could understand the power of change of the actual people in positions of power. Becoming a mayor or an attorney on a regional level is not the only thing we can become after graduation. We were encouraged to search for paths outside the traditional approaches and learned how to influence decision-making in city councils and regional councils.

    A Professional and Helpful Atmosphere

Wanting to learn political structures and new technological approaches to an administration led me to start my education with Political Science. Of course, I had to start with the basics including political philosophy and theories that only helped to better understand contemporary institutional structures on state and multinational levels. I was part of some debates organized by the political science club of the faculty. Ethics and law were a big part of the subjects in the program. In the 3rd semester, I was able to study programming at the university by signing up for an extra course in a different department. Nevertheless, I was able to implement some of those classes into my graduation thesis and further work on technological advancement in the administrative sector.
