In 1990, a merger with the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education took place, followed by another merger with 3 campuses of Victoria College (Rusden , Burwood and Toorrak) one year later. Some years later, in 2003, the Rusden Campus was closed and all programs were moved to the Melbourne Burwood campus. Three years later, the Toorak Campus was put on sale, as the University considered the facilities were no longer needed, and their courses were transferred to the Melbourne Burwood campus in the following year.

Academics in Deakin University

Currently, the university is divided into four areas: arts and education, engineering and built environment, health and science, business and law. All these faculties have specialized schools and focus on specific subjects, such as the Deakin University School of Law, the Institute of Koorie Education or the School of Medicine. Furthermore, the university has four research institutes at their disposal: Institute for Inteligent Systems Research and Innovation, the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition, the Institute for Frontier Materials and the Alfred Deakin Institute. Along with these , there are 13 strategic research centres.

Student Life in Deakin University

With more than 54,000 students currently enrolled, 15,000 of which are postgraduate students, and with a staff consisting of more than 4,000 people, Deakin University has a strong community and union as well. Deakin University Student Association is the representant of the interests of the students, and they operate across all campuses and programs.
