Currently a first year computer science student after spending an initial year enrolled on the University’s Science and Engineering Foundation Year.
As a student who had received numerous other offers to enrol at other universities in the UK, I would highly recommend taking this extra (foundation) year to anyone who has not quite obtained the grades high enough to enrol straight into their desired degree program.
The School of Computer Science is located inside the Kilburn Building on main campus. Although the Kilburn Building itself is incredibly ugly, and has limited natural light inside, the school and teaching here is fantastic. Being one of (if not) the largest school of computer science in the UK, the computer science programme at UoM gives students an incredibly wide variety of topics in the field to study. The school also has a “hardware library”, where students can borrow a wide variety of hardware, such as Raspberry Pi’s and AR Drones.
Students from the University’s School of Computer Science are also incredibly sought after by employers, as workplace skills and techniques feature heavily in the school’s curriculum. Regular “Job Fairs” are also hosted inside the Kilburn Building, tailored especially for students enrolled on a Computer Science related course, with a diverse range of tech companies, including larger ones such as Amazon, Bloomberg and Google regularly in attendance.
The school also has an incredibly active Computer Science Society (UniCS), who host regular hackathons, workshops and social events throughout the year.
Outside of the school, there are more than 300 clubs and societies students can get involved with. One society in particular, Manchester Entrepreneurs, also hosts regular workshops and events that allow students to network, and be inspired by successful entrepreneurs around the UK. I would definitely recommend this society to anyone looking to start their own business.
